Students will develop their ability to read a text for detailed information as well as the ability to analyse its content.
 
授業内容
Selected texts will be studied in class after which students write answers to comprehension style questions on the text. This will be followed by small group discussions of analytical type questions relating to the text, after which feedback will be provided by each group. Students will also do TOEIC Reading exercises for the last 20 minutes of class.
Preparation for class: 2 hours textual reading
Review of class: 2 hours for comprehension questions.

1. Course Introduction: explanation and confirmation of syllabus details to students followed by an introduction to Oscar Wilde and his life and work. Students will read Wilde’s story ‘The happy prince’ (pp 71-78) for class 2. TOEIC Reading exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
2. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
‘The happy prince’ (pp 71-78) will be explained by the teacher, including difficult vocabulary and idioms. Students will then write answers to comprehension questions on the text. After checking answers, students will be divided into small groups to discuss an analytical question on the assigned text with one student in each group taking a memorandum for the group. Finally, feedback will be provided by each group to the teacher. Students will read ‘The nightingale and the rose’ (pp 79-84) for class 3. TOEIC Reading exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
3. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.

12. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Students will complete a final test on an unseen text in class which will include both comprehension and analytical type questions. A course evaluation sheet will also be completed in class. TOEIC Reading exercises (final 20 minutes of class).

授業運営
This course can be taken as a continuation of the Composition III course from the Spring term or as a stand alone course. The chief focus of this course will be the development of reading, comprehension and analytical skills.
