到達目標
The aim of this course is for students to improve their skills in English composition. This will be achieved through the building of paragraph writing skills with a view to writing a short essay on an assigned text by the end of the course.
 
授業内容
In this course students will learn how to construct paragraphs in a clear and coherent way. They will also learn how to paraphrase and summarise selected texts. Students will also do TOEIC Writing exercises for the last 20 minutes of class.
Preparation for class: 2 hours textual reading.
Review of class: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
 
授業計画
Schedule:
1. Course Introduction: explanation and confirmation of syllabus details to students.
Students will complete exercises from printout of Research and write, pp 56-58. Students will complete exercises on ‘writing introductions, supporting paragraphs and conclusions’ (pp 59-63) for class 2. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
2. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Students will check answers from homework with partners and teacher will then confirm answers with class. Teacher will introduce ‘Paraphrasing and summarizing’ and students will complete exercises from printout of Research and write, pp 80-85. Students will complete exercises on ‘The argumentative essay’ (pp, 88-92) for class 3. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
3. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Part I of class: Students will check answers from homework with partners and teacher will then confirm answers with class. Part II of class: Introduction to Oscar Wilde and his short stories. Students will read and summarize Wilde’s story ‘The Canterville ghost’ (pp 38-50) for class 4. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
4. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
‘The Canterville ghost’ (pp 38-50) will be explained by the teacher. Students will then write a paragraph in answer to a given question relating to the assigned text. This will be submitted to the teacher together with the homework online. Students will read and summarize 'The Canterville ghost’ (pp 51-64) for class 5. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
5. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
'The Canterville ghost’ (pp 51-64)will be explained by the teacher. Students will then write a paragraph in answer to a given question relating to the assigned text. This will be submitted to the teacher together with the homework online. Students will revise content of classes 1-5 for homework in preparation for class 6. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
6. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Students will summarize, write a paragraph and answer written questions on the story ‘The model millionaire’ (pp 64-68). Students will read and summarize ‘The Sphinx without a secret’ (pp 33-37) for class 7. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
7. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
‘The Sphinx without a secret’ (pp 33-37) will be explained by the teacher. Students will then write a paragraph in answer to a given question relating to the assigned text. This will be submitted to the teacher together with the homework online. Students will read and summarize ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s crime’ (pp 3-13) for class 8. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
8. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
‘Lord Arthur Savile’s crime’ (pp 3-13) will be explained by the teacher. Students will then write a paragraph in answer to a given question relating to the assigned text. This will be submitted to the teacher together with the homework online. Students will read and summarize ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s crime’ (pp 13-23) for class 9. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
9. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
‘Lord Arthur Savile’s crime’ (pp 13-23) will be explained by the teacher. Students will then write a paragraph in answer to a given question relating to the assigned text. This will be submitted to the teacher together with the homework online. Students will read and summarize ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s crime’ (pp 23-32) for class 10. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
10. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
‘Lord Arthur Savile’s crime’ (pp 23-32) will be explained by the teacher. Students will then write a paragraph in answer to a given question relating to the assigned text. This will be submitted to the teacher together with the homework online. Students must write a first draft of an essay question relating to ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s crime’ for homework for class 11. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
11. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Essay Project preview: students submit and receive feedback on first draft of essay. Students write final draft of essay for class 12. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
12. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Final Essay presentations: Students give short presentation on final draft of essay and complete course evaluation sheet. TOEIC Writing exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.

 
授業運営
The essay writing skills learned in this course will be put into practice in the construction of an essay which will be completed by students by the end of the course. Copies of all materials will be provided by the teacher.
