到達目標
Students will develop the ability to express themselves in a clear and confident way in an English language environment through the use of role play, discussion and an end of term online presentation.
 
授業内容
This course can be taken either as a continuation of Communication I from the Spring term or as a stand alone course. It will give students the opportunity to express themselves through role play of characters in the assigned text provided. This will be followed by small group discussions of assigned questions related to the text studied in class. Students will also do TOEIC Speaking exercises for the last 20 minutes of class.
Preparation for class: 2 hours textual reading.
Review of class: 2 hours for comprehension questions.

Schedule:
1. Course Introduction: explanation and confirmation of syllabus details to students; Introduction to Tennessee Williams and the context of his play "A Streetcar named Desire." Students must read and summarize Scene I of play (pp 2-15) for class 2. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
2. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Visual Presentation II of "A Streetcar named Desire": students write answers in class to question sheet relating to Visual Presentation II and give to teacher at end of class. Students must read Scene II of play (pp 15-24) before class 3. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
3. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scene II read aloud by students in turn and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of the American Civil War in relation to the play. Students must read Scene III of play (pp 24-34) before class 4. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
4. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scene III read aloud by students in turn and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of homosexuality and the law in relation to the play. Students must read Scene IV of play (pp 34-41) before class 5. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
5. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scene IV read aloud by students in turn and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of the theme of desire and fate in relation to the play. Students must read Scene V of play (pp 42-49) before class 6. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
6. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scene V read aloud by students in turn explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of the theme of the theme of death and madness in relation to the play. Students must revise Scenes I-V for Mid Term test, the content of which is explained in class. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
7. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Mid-term test: Students write short essay in class relating to a theme/background of the play. Students must read Scene VI of play (pp 50-57) before class 8. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
8. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scene VI read aloud by students in turn and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of the character of Blanche in the play. Students must read Act II of play, Scenes VII-VIII (pp 58-69) before class 9. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
9. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scenes VII-VIII read aloud by students in turn and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of the character of Stanley in the play Students must read Scene IX-X of play (pp 69-81) before class 10. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
10. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scenes IX-X read aloud by students in turn and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of the character of Stella in the play. Students must read Scene XI of play (pp 81-90) before class 11. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
11. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Scene XI read aloud by students in turn and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of the character of Mitch in the play. Students must write a first draft of essay relating to an important theme or character in the play for homework. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
12. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Essay Project preview: Students submit and receive feedback on first draft of essay in class. Students write final draft of essay for homework. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.

 
授業運営
Class sessions will include student readings and teacher’s explanation of the text followed by online discussions. Other course requirements include the presentation of an essay project related to the text studied.
