到達目標
Students will develop the ability to express themselves in a clear and confident way in an English language environment through the use of role play, discussion and an end of term online presentation.
 
授業内容
This course will give students the opportunity to express themselves through role play of characters in the assigned text provided. This will be followed by online discussions of assigned questions related to the text studied in class. Students will also do TOEIC exercises for the last 20 minutes.
Preparation for class: 2 hours textual reading.
Review of class: 2 hours for comprehension questions.

Schedule:
1. Course Introduction: explanation and confirmation of syllabus details to students. Brief introduction to Arthur Miller and the context of his play "Death of a Salesman." TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension question sheet.
2. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act I of play, section 1-2, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of theme of ‘Capitalism’ in relation to the play. Students must read Act I of play, section 3-5 (pp 21-32) before class 5. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
3. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act I of play, section 3-5, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of theme of ‘The American Dream’ in relation to the play. Students must read Act I of play, section 6-7 (pp 32-41) before class 6. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
4. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act I of play, section 6-7, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of theme of ‘McCarthyism’ in relation to the play. Students must read Act I of play, section 8 (pp 41-54) before class 7. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
5. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act I of play, section 8, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of theme of the Value of Life in relation to the play. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
6. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading. Students write paragraph relating to a theme of the play and submit online. Students must read Act II of play, section 1-3 (pp 55-70) before class 9. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
7. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act II of play, section 1-3, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of Man in Society in relation to the play Students must read Act II of play, section 4-5 (pp 70-87) before class 10. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
8. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act II of play, section 4-5, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of character of Willie Loman in the play Students must read Act II of play, section 6-9 (pp 87-96) before class 11. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
9. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act II of play, section 6-9, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of characters of Biff and Happy Loman in the play. Students must read Act II of play, section 10-12 (pp 97-109) before class 12. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
10. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Act II of play, section 10-12, read by students and explained in detail by teacher, followed by short quiz on text studied; discussion of characters of Charley and Bernard in the play Students must write a first draft of essay relating to an important theme or character in the play for homework. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
11. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Essay Project preview: Students submit and receive feedback online on first draft of essay in class. Students write final draft of essay for homework. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.
12. Preparation: 2 hours textual reading.
Final Essay presentations: Students give short presentation on final draft of essay and complete course evaluation sheet in class. TOEIC Speaking exercises (final 20 minutes of class).
Review: 2 hours for comprehension questions.

 
授業運営
Class sessions will include student readings and teacher’s explanation of the text followed by online discussions. Other course requirements include the presentation of an essay project related to the text studied.
