到達目標
The study of graphic fiction has become one of the major topics in studying popular culture as a whole, while providing a key to understanding its respective cultural background. This is especially true for the American comic book as central part of American popular culture. By studying the American comic book as a whole, this class wants to examine their cultural significance while providing knowledge about the different periods and genres of the comic book in their respective backgrounds, furthering the understanding of American popular culture.

授業内容
This seminar, together with the lecture on graphic fiction, aims at providing an overview of American comics from its beginning in the 1930s until the 1990s, examining the first three major periods of the genre: The golden age, the silver age and the bronze age. We will then look at the historical and cultural background of this area of the American comic book and discuss its cultural significance. The main point of the seminar is taking a closer look at the texts and movies seen in the lecture course and discussing them in detail. Participants will be asked to present their own research on the various topics of this course.
