Students will learn basic knowledge on the design and synthesis of organic functional materials as well as applications to organic electronic devices, such as organic light-emitting diode (OLED), solar cell, and transistor.
 
授業内容 Course Content
This course will cover design, synthesis and applications of organic functional materials. Because of rapid development of this area, special topics may be provided without prior announcement.
 
授業計画 Course Planning
Each class will cover the following:
1. Guidance: development of organic functional materials
2. Molecular orbital and units of energy
3. pi-Conjugated hydrocarbons
4. Carbon clusters
5. Heterocyclic compounds (1): thiopehene, furan, and pyrrole
6. Heterocyclic compounds (2): porphyrins and phthalocyanines
7. Heterocyclic compounds (3): boron, silicon, and phosphorus-containing compounds
8. Sigma-conjugation
9. Unsaturated compounds of heavy elements
10. Applications
11. Understanding of functions using molecular orbital theory
12. Carbon: an alternative of rare elements
13. Future of organic functional materials
14. Summary

 
授業運営 Course Management
Combination of lecture and presentation. The lecturer will give introduction of each topic and show some reference papers. Students will give a short presentation and discussion on one of the referred papers in the following class. Every student is supposed to give presentation at least three times.
 
評価方法 Evaluation Method
Presentations (50%) and reports (50%).
Report assignments will be provided in the class. You need read manuscripts and report the followings: Problems to be solved in the manuscript, methods and schemes, scientific novelty, future subjects in the field. Copy-and-pastes from the manuscript are not accepted.
