到達目標 Target to be Reached
1) To help students better understand how culture changes as it crosses national and cultural borders, using Japan as our example.
2) To help students to better understand how foreign images of Japan compare with the culture of the people who live in Japan and whether/why that matters.
3) To foster students’ critical thinking skills as we read, talk, and think about the topic.
4) To help students develop their study skills in English, including reading for meaning (rather than trying to understand every word), and expressing yourself in English in an academic environment.
 
授業内容 Course Content
In this course, we will look how Japanese culture is transformed and consumed outside Japan’s borders with examples from both Asia and the Anglophone (English-speaking) world.

授業運営 Course Management
Most class sessions will include both lectures and discussions. Discussions will be based on the content of lectures and assigned readings.

Students will be expected to
1) Read assigned readings, try to understand the main idea, and answer comprehension questions before class.
2) Take notes about readings and during lectures to facilitate discussions in class.
—Students are also strongly encouraged to keep a list of key words and phrases related to the course content.
3) Actively participate in small group and class discussions.
4) Prepare three mini responses.
—There are four main themes this semester. You must do one response each for three of them.
—Details on how to do mini responses will be provided in class.
5) Prepare a report on a topic related to one of the main themes this semester.
—Details will be provided in class.
6) Prepare a presentation on the content of your report.

Note: This is an English-only course. Students will be expected to communicate exclusively in English during class time.

Mini Responses 50%
Final Report and Presentation 40%
Active Participation 10%

NOTE: Students who miss more than four classes will NOT receive credit for this course.
